Last monday a White-crowned Wheatear was reported. Birders in The Netherlands were excited, since it would be the first time this bird would have shown up here. People came from all over the country to catch a glimp. In hind sight, the hurry wasn’t all that necessary, since local residents reported that the bird was already around for over ten days. It hangs around at some apartment buildings. The question whether or not this bird is truly wild will be a hard one to answer, but at the moment no evidence has been found that it is an escape. At any rate, great fun to watch and nice to see the usual suspects again. A twitch normally doesn’t render great images, but I was happy with this ‘weird’ shot of the bird on a glass structure. Luckily I also have seen the bird in it’s natural habitat, northern Africa 🙂

Afgelopen maandag werd er een Witkruintapuit gemeld. Vogelaars uit heel Nederland raakten in extase, want het zou de eerste keer zijn dat deze soort ons land aan deed. Uit het hele land kwamen mensen een kijkje nemen. Achteraf gezien was hun haast niet echt nodig, want het beest zat er volgens bewoners al een dag of tien. Hij hangt trouwens rond bij wat flatgebouwen. De vraag of het een wilde vogel is, zal lastig te beantwoorden zijn, maar momenteel zijn er niet echt aanwijzingen dat het een escape betreft. In elk geval, erg leuk om te zien en weer even een paar bekenden te spreken. Een twitch levert normaalgesproken niet vaak goed opnames op, maar ik was toch blij met deze ‘vreemde’ foto van de vogel op een glaswandje. Gelukkig heb ik de vogel ook al eens in zijn thuisomgeving, noordelijk Afrika, kunnen zien 🙂
