Last week I had two chances of photographing Black-crowned Night-herons (“Kwak” in Dutch). But, there were some 5.000 miles between them: one location was in Utah (United States), whereas the other was in The Netherlands. Believe it or not, but it was my first photo opportunity with this species in my home country (the bird is very rare overhere). This made me think: I have seen this bird in many different locations over the last years: Greece, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Brazil, US – you name it! Apparently one of this birds that is able to make itself feel at home almost anywhere. The bird is present on most continents, except for Australia and the Antarctic. Mainly found in wetlands and mangroves, I was surprised to find them in significant numbers in Downtown Shanghai as well, earlier this year in May. Anyway, yesterday I visited a juvenile bird that seems to have made it it’s personal goal to get photographed by as many bird lovers as possible, which included me 😉

Vorige week had ik twee kansen om de Kwak te fotograferen. Er zat alleen circa 8.000 kilometer tussen: één locatie was in Utah (Verenigde Staten), terwijl de andere gewoon hier in Nederland was. Geloof het of niet, maar dit was voor mij het eerste fotomoment voor deze soort in Nederland (de vogel is zeldzaam in NL). Dit zette me aan het denken: ik heb deze vogel op heel diverse plekken gezien de afgelopen jaren: Griekenland, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Brazilië, de VS – noem maar op! Klaarblijkelijk een van de soorten die in staat is zich vrijwel overal thuis te voelen. De vogel is te vinden op de meeste werelddelen, behalve Australië en Antarctica. Je vindt ze voornamelijk in wetlands en mangroves, dus ik was dan ook verbaasd ze in behoorlijke aantallen aan te treffen in de binnenstad van Shanghai, eerder dit jaar in mei. Kort en goed: gisteren bezocht ik de jonge Kwak in Overveen die zich tot doel lijkt te hebben gesteld om door zoveel mogelijk vogelliefhebbers vereeuwigd te worden, mezelf incluis 😉
