Forest Time

Great Spotted Woodpecker – Grote Bonte Specht

Last week I spent much time among plovers and stilts, in open areas. This weekend however I found myself mostly in forested areas, one close by and another in eastern part of Holland. As one can expect, this made for different birds: more tits, woodpeckers and the like ! Who knows what is next ? ;-) I hope for Cranes (Kraanvogels) in Sweden :-)

Workin’ days…

These days a lot of the smaller birds are feeding their chicks. The Blue Tits (Pimpelmees) in the nesting cage, attached on my first floor balcony, are raising eleven (!) chicks at the moment. Since the cage is ‘camera-equiped’ we can follow this on our TV-screen. It’s great to watch and a lot of friends are visiting us to have a look at ‘our’ babies. The Marsh Tits (Glanskop) are the new neighbors of the Sparrow-hawk couple I have been monitoring over the last weeks. They have their nest inside a tree and use a real ‘entrance’ and ‘exit’ for their nest. Collecting food, feeding the chicks, and taking the garbage out. And this hundreds of times a day.. That’s what we call ‘workin’ days’. On the upside: the young will leave the nest within a couple of weeks….

Oh yes: these shots were taken close to the nests. Nesting photography is a delicate issue, but rest assured: I kept a good distance from the birds,  all shots are cropped heavily. The feeding process has not been disturbed while taking these pictures !

Although I am still sorting out the 1.600 images from my 6-day trip to Thailand, whenever I can I go out and check the local birds. Last weekend I spent two days on the island of Texel with a group of friends, always good for some shots. Anyway, please check out the Birds Asia Gallery every now and then for fresh updates from Thailand – in the meantime herewith some birds of the last days….

A while ago I noticed that the back-garden is frequently visited by Blue Tits and Great Tits. Before flying to the apple tree, they usually land on the ledge of our 1st floor balcony. I thought it might be worth placing a branch there and see if they would use that instead. This could give me the possibility to experiment with different backgrounds (green tree, fall-colored trees) and light conditions (shadow in the morning, sun around noon) – all depending on the place I put my tripod. So yesterday and today I spent some cold moments waiting behind my camera. Always interesting to see how much difference the back ground makes for the overall image!

Feeding the Chicks

. The pictures are hence of bad quality, since they are taken through the window. Another nest, close to our home, is that of a family of Nuthatches. Same procedure: the parents are flying of and on with insects and other stuf as you can see in the pics.
