The Ruddy Turnstone can be found almost everywhere at coastlines around the world, depending on the season that is. Here in The Netherlands we have many of them in winter time, and they are known to be a rather abundand and ease-to-approach species. Okay, they lack the flashy summer plumage when around here, but they make up for that by their aforementioned modelling skills. There is however a second Turnstone on this planet, the Black Turnstone. It is seen only on the western shores of Canada, the US and Mexico. I found some of them last September in Pacific Grove, California. It was the first time I saw them, and although they seemed much less approachable than the Ruddy’s, I could make some shots. The feet color seems to be the most distinct difference in winter plumage as you can tell from the images… 😉

De Steenloper kom je, afhankelijk van het seizoen, vrijwel overal ter wereld langs de kust tegen. Hier in Nederland zien we er veel gedurende de wintermaanden, en ze staan bekend als een talrijke en goed benaderbare soort. Okay, ze hebben weliswaar niet hun flitsende zomerkleed als ze hier zijn, maar dat maken ze ruimschoots goed met hun gewilligheid als fotomodel. Er is echter nog een tweede Steenloper op deze planeet, de Zwarte Steenloper. Deze wordt alleen aangetroffen langs de westkust van Canada, VS en Mexico. Ik vond er afgelopen september enkele in Pacific Grove, Californië. Het was de eerste keer dat ik ze zag, en hoewel ze een stuk minder goed benaderbaar leken dan onze Steenlopers, kon ik toch wat foto’s maken. De kleur van de pootjes lijkt trouwens het meest opvallende kenmerk bij het winterkleed, zoals je kunt zien aan de foto’s… 😉
