Sandwich Terns are true acrobats of the sky. Tirelessly flying around, they scan the seas below. When they think there’s something worthwhile below the surface, they quickly turn. twist and dive into the waters. Unpredictable and hence hard to capture. Some weeks ago, when birding for a day with Menno in the Dutch Delta, we saw quite a few of them. And they did exactly what the field guide says: “When feeding, often patrol at greater height than Common or Arctic Tern, with bill pointing down, making sudden and bold dive to catch fish”. I kept on making shots until my arms got too tired to swing around the big lens any longer 😉 . Time for Menno’s (by then cold) coffee ….

Grote Sterns zijn waarlijk luchtacrobaten. Onvermoeibaar vliegen ze rond en scannen de zee onder zich. Wanneer ze denken dat er iets zit dat de moeite waard is, keren ze in een oogwenk, draaien en duiken in het water. Onvoorspelbaar en daarom nog best moeilijk vast te leggen. Een paar weken geleden, tijdens een dagje vogelen in de Hollandse Delta met Menno, zagen we er behoorlijk wat. En ze gedroegen zich precies zoals de vogelgids het omschrijft: “Vliegt tijdens het foerageren hoger dan Visdief of Noordse Stern, met omlaagwijzende snavel, plotseling in een steile hoek in het water duikend”. Ik heb foto’s gemaakt tot mijn armen te vermoeid waren om nog langer rond te zwaaien met de grote lens 😉 . En toen was het tijd voor Menno’s (inmiddels koude) koffie ….
