Tijdens mijn bezoek aan Marokko vorig jaar, hadden we de Afrikaanse vink (Atlasvink) een beetje links laten liggen. Niet expres of met kwade opzet, maar er was gewoon zoveel anders te fotograferen. En je kunt je aandacht toch maar op een beperkt aantal dingen richten, althans ik. Vorig voorjaar had ik onze ‘eigen’ vink als terugherontdekt als foto-onderwerp, en dit jaar besloten we daarom om ook maar wat extra tijd in z’n Afrikaanse broertje te steken. Aanvankelijk nog niet zo heel eenvoudig, maar uiteindelijk lukte het best aardig. Een fijn gekleurd en getekend vogeltje. Er is nogal wat discussie gaande of het nu wel of geen ondersoort is, maar wie weet maak ik het nog mee dat er een definitief oordeel over wordt geveld. In elk geval geldt: gelukkig hebben we de foto’s al!

During our visit to Morocco last year, we had more or less overlooked the African chaffinch (Atlas chaffinch). Not intentionally or with any ill intent—there was simply so much else to photograph. And you can only focus your attention on a limited number of things, at least I can. Last spring, I rediscovered our “own” chaffinch as a photography subject, and therefore this year we decided to devote some extra time to its African cousin. At first, it wasn’t all that easy, but in the end it worked out quite well. A beautifully colored and finely patterned little bird. There’s quite a bit of debate about whether it is or isn’t a subspecies, but who knows—I might still live to see a final verdict. In any case: fortunately, we already have the photos!
