Eind jaren negentig las ik ‘Barrel Fever’, het debuut van David Sedaris, een Amerikaans schrijver van korte en meestal humoristische verhalen. Klaarblijkelijk beviel het, want sindsdien heb ik vrijwel alle boeken die hij daarna publiceerde gelezen. Toen ik onlangs een middelste zaagbek fotografeerde op een drijvende ton, bedacht ik me direct dat ‘Barrel Fever’ wel een aardige titel voor een blogje zou zijn. Iets in de trant van ‘bang op een ton’ misschien. Bang om nat te worden bijvoorbeeld. Ik had echter in de afgelopen 25 jaar nooit de moeite genomen te kijken wat nu de precieze definitie was van ‘Barrel Fever’ en wat blijkt? Het duidt op een brak gevoel door teveel alcohol consumptie. Dat heeft natuurlijk met deze fraaie watervogel niks te maken, maar dat maakt niet uit. Zelf was ik wel duizelig en misselijk tijdens het maken van deze foto’s , maar dat kwam dan weer niet door de alcohol. Enfin, het is altijd wat. Ik had de foto’s en de titel, en heb nu ook nog wat bijgeleerd in categorie ‘Engelse uitdrukkingen’. Wat wil je nog meer?
In the late 1990s, I read the debut of David Sedaris, an American writer of short and usually humorous stories: Barrel Fever. Apparently, I enjoyed it, as since then, I’ve read almost all the books he has published. When I recently photographed a Red-breasted Merganser on a floating barrel, I immediately thought it would make for a nice title for a blog post. Maybe something in the line of ‘sitting scared on a barrel’? Scared to get wet for example. However, I had over the last 25 years never bothered to check the exact definition of Barrel Fever, and what turns out? It refers to the feeling of being sick from excessive alcohol consumption. This, of course, has nothing to do with this beautiful waterfowl, but that doesn’t matter. I did feel dizzy and nauseous while taking these photos, but that wasn’t due to alcohol. Anyway, it’s always something. I had the photos and the title, and now I’ve also learned something new in the category of ‘English expressions’. What more could you want?
