Birds in Flight (BIF) are always a challenge. And not only in terms of speed and getting the focus right in time. Especially the background is always an issue. Simply having the subject framed against the sky is usually not very exciting and I find those shots most of the time not very interesting. Exception is of course when the sky has nice colors, dramatic clouds or when you have the bird in backlight, as in the opening shot of this blog. For me it works better however, when the flying bird is photographed against some kind of ‘real’ background. In The Netherlands, which is a flat country, most of the time this would be some trees, reeds or something like that. But some birds don’t fly that low all the time. So, when visting other countries with mountains, for me it’s always a great experience. Some weeks ago in Utah I experimented a bit with these kind of backgrounds. In this blog some results !

Vogels in Vlucht zijn altijd een uitdaging. En niet alleen vanwege de snelheid en het op tijd kunnen focussen. Met name de achtergrond is altijd ingewikkeld. Je onderwerp gewoon tegen een egale lucht is meestal niet zo spectaculair en ik vind dat soort opnames vaak niet erg interessant. Een uitzondering is het natuurlijk wanneer de lucht fraaie kleuren heeft, er dramatische wolkenluchten zijn of de vogel in tegenlicht is gefotografeerd, zoals in de openingsfoto van dit blog. Ik vind het echter meestal spannender wanneer de vogel tegen een ‘echte’ achtergrond gefotografeerd is. In Nederland, een vlak land, is dat meestel een bomenrij of riet. Maar sommige vogels vliegen niet altijd zo laag. Dus als ik landen bezoek met bergen, is dat voor mij altijd een geweldige ervaring. Enkele weken geleden heb ik in Utah wat geëxperimenteerd met dit soort achtergronden. In die blog zie je wat resultaten !
