Earlier this week I found a leucistic Common Blackbird. Leucism is a general term for the phenotype resulting from defects in pigment cell differentiation and/or migration from the neutral to skin, hair, or feathers during development (source: Wikipedia). This individual was about half-white.  Together with a normal eye color, this proved that the bird was not albino. Anyway, compared to the ‘normal’ Blackbirds I have around here, it was rather alert – maybe the color makes it more prone to predators? After spending considerable time, I finally could make some shots while it was feeding between the leaves on the ground. Actually it was in a field covered with stinging nettle, so I found out the hard way that my trousers are not nettle proof 🙁 …..

Eerder deze week vond ik een leucistische Merel. Leucisme is een afwijking bij dieren en mensen die leidt tot een verminderde pigmentatie. Leucisme lijkt op albinisme en wordt daar soms mee verward. Leucisme resulteert in een vermindering van alle types huidpigment (bron: Wikipedia). Deze vogel was ongeveer half-half. Tezamen met een normale oogkleur vormt dit het bewijs dat het geen albino is. Vergeleken met de ‘normale’ Merels die ik hier heb, was deze behoorlijk alert – misschien zorgt de kleur dat hij een gemakkelijker prooi is voor rovers? Na behoorlijk wat tijd, kon ik eindelijk wat foto’s maken terwijl de vogel aan foerageren was tussen de bladeren op de grond. Het was trouwens een veldje brandnetels, waardoor ik er achter kwam dat mijn broek niet echt ‘brandneteldicht’ is … 🙁
