The last five years I visited the Salt Lake area every August, and was able to see my beloved Burrowing Owls. But seeing and framing are two different things. So of course I owe a lot to my friends Mia McPherson and Ron Dudley, since they have been kind enough to make some suggestions as for where to look. This year was exceptionally good, since the burrow I visited was close to the road (shooting these owls can only be done from the car or hide). I paid the owls two visits, and got up at 5:15 a.a. to make sure to arrive at the burrow before sunrise (around 6:30 a.m.). This offered best light conditions and during the first 3o minutes, when the sun had not yet risen above the mountains, the owls showed their wide open pupils. After checking me out for a while and turning it’s head in assessing this ‘stranger with camera’, the owl perched on a fence post and started preening, which gave some other shooting opportunities. After having spent two hours with the owl and taking many shots, I decided to call it a day and come back the next day 🙂 ….

De afgelopen vijf jaar bezocht ik het gebied rond Salt Lake elk jaar in Augustus, en kon daar mijn geliefde Holenuilen zien. Maar zien en fotograferen zijn twee verschillende dingen. Dus ben ik veel dank verschuldigd aan  Mia McPherson en Ron Dudley, die zo vriendelijk waren mij op weg te helpen met suggesties over waar te zoeken. Dit jaar was zelfs bijzonder goed, omdat de burcht vlakbij de weg lag (het fotograferen lukt alleen vanuit de auto of schuiltent). Ik bezocht de uilen tweemaal, en stond om 5:15 op om te zorgen dat ik voor zonsopgang (circa 6:30) ter plaatse was. Dit bood het beste licht en gedurende de eerste 30 minuten, als de zon nog niet over de bergen was geklommen, hadden de uiltjes nog enorme grote, wijd openstaande pupillen. Nadat een uil deze ‘vreemdeling met camera’ een tijdje nieuwsgierig had bekeken, ging hij op een paaltje zitten om zich eens uitgebreid te poetsen, wat weer wat andere fotokansen bood. Na twee uurtjes bij deze uil te zijn geweest, besloot ik dat het mooi was, en dat ik de volgende dag nog weer terug zou gaan 🙂 ….
