The California Quail almost looks unreal. At close inspection the patterns in the feathers are almost too good to be true. Not to mention the head plume… I guess you could call them ‘design birds’. No wonder that I have tried several times over the last years to frame this bird. During my travels I encountered on several occasions groups of them, but most of the times they proved to be oh so shy. Or, when I found a group that looked willing to cooperate, a car or other person came along and gone they were again. During a foggy morning in Point Reyes last September, I found a group that was feeding on the trail. One of the men kept watch and had positioned itself on a fence pole. I took ample time to get closer step by step, and after some time I was close enough to take some shots. I was working with backlight and on top of that, it was still foggy, making high shutter speeds impossible. Having decided to take my old D300 on the hike, a high ISO was 0ut of the question as well. Many shots therefore ended in the bin, however some turned out okay…. So, I am not finished with them yet 🙂 ….
De Californische Kuifkwartel is bijna onwerkelijk. Van dichtbij lijken de patronen van de veren bijna te mooi om waar te zijn. Om nog maar niet te spreken van de kuif… Je zou het wel ‘design vogels’ kunnen noemen. Geen wonder dat ik deze soort de afgelopen jaren diverse malen heb geprobeerd te fotograferen. Tijdens mijn reizen kwam ik geregeld groepjes tegen, maar meestal waren ze o zo schuw. Of, wanneer ik groep gevonden had die wel benaderbaar leek, kwam er weer een auto of wandelaar langs en was de groep weer direct vertrokken. Tijdens een mistige morgen in Point Reyes afgelopen September, trof ik een foeragerend groepje op het wandelpad. Eén van de mannen hield te wacht, en was op een paaltje gaan staan. Ik nam uitgebreid de tijd om stapje voor stapje dichterbij te komen, en na een tijdje was ik dichtbij genoeg om wat foto’s te maken. Ik moest werken met tegenlicht en daarnaast de nog steeds aanwezig mist, die hoge sluitertijden onmogelijk maakte. Aangezien ik besloten had mijn oude D300 mee te nemen voor de wandeling, was een hoge ISO ook geen optie. Kortom: de meeste foto’s belandden dus in de prullenmand, maar sommige bleken toch wel okay…. Desalniettemin ben ik nog niet klaar me deze soort 🙂 ….
