During my Utah visit, as usual I spent some time on Antelope Island. While descending for Salt Lake’s Airport, I noticed the low level of water in The Great Salt Lake – it looked like one could go to the island by foot (see the attached image I took with my cell phone). One of the main attractions of Antelope Island are of course the Bisons. And they are not only attracting tourists, but also Brown-headed Cowbirds, sometimes tens of them at the time, perching on the Bison’s backs. A symbiotic or win-win situation: the Cowbirds feed on the parasites that can be found on the Bisons. And fun to watch as well 😉 .

Tijdens mijn bezoek aan Utah ga ik gewoonlijk ook even naar Antelope Island. Tijdens de daling naar het vliegveld van Salt Lake City viel me op hoe weinig water er in het Great Salt Lake stond – het leek wel alsof je er zo naartoe zou kunnen lopen (zie de foto die ik met mijn telefoon maakte). Eén van de hoofdattracties van Antelope Island zijn natuurlijke de Bisons. En ze trekken niet alleen toeristen aan, maar ook Bruinkopkoevogels, soms zitten ze met tientallen tegelijk op de rug van een Bison. Een symbiotische ofwel win-win situatie: de Koevogels eten namelijk de parasieten die op de rug van de Bisons zitten. En ook nog leuk om te zien 😉 .
