This year, both Kestrel nest boxes in my area rendered five chicks. One of these boxes is at walking distance from my house, and usually when running in the woods I stop briefly to check it. About ten days ago I noticed that they were ready to leave the nest. With five almost full grown falcons, the place was pretty crowded. At the times I visited the place with my camera, they stayed inside though. Every now and then they were trying to flap their wings and balancing on the bar in front of the box. By the way, always fun to watch them relieve themselves. Properly raised as they are, they do this ‘out of the box’ 😉 . In order to do so, they have to climb out of the box, make a clumsy turn and after the act, do the whole choreography in reverse. Much amusing. I missed them flying out, but once they have done so at this location, photo-ops are not all that exciting. Usually they stay pretty high-up in the trees, which doesn’t make for great shots. So, in order to get some interesting shots of young birds outside their nest, yesterday at dawn I drove the short stretch to the shoreline. There’s another next box in the dunes, with a chance to have the birds perched at fences or bushes. I found all five chicks there as well, and for a while they seemed willing to work along. After the sun got higher though, they retreated to a building to take a nap. Which was a perfect moment for me to go home and get some coffee….
Dit jaar hebben beide Torenvalkkasten in mijn omgeving vijf jongen afgeleverd. Eén van die kasten is op loopafstand van mijn huis, en meestel stop ik tijdens mijn hardlooprondje door het bos even om te kijken hoe het ervoor staat. Ongeveer tien dagen geleden zag ik dat ze bijna klaar waren om uit te vliegen. Met vijf bijna volgroeide jongen was het inmiddels een behoorlijk volle boel daar in die kast. De momenten dat er ik met de camera langs ging, bleven ze echter nog binnen, hoewel ze wel af en toe vliegbewegingen maakten op de railing voor de kast. Ook altijd leuk trouwens om te zien hoe ze hun behoeften doen. Netjes opgevoed als ze zijn, doen ze dit natuurlijk ‘out of the box’ 😉 . Om dat te doen moeten ze eerst uit de kast klauteren, zich vervolgens wat onbeholpen omdraaien om, na de daad, deze hele dans weer in omgekeerde volgorde te doen. Erg amusant. Het moment van uitvliegen zelf heb ik net gemist. Maar de fotokansen op die plek zijn sowieso niet zo geweldig, omdat ze meestal hoog in de bomen gaan zitten. Dus, om toch wat leuke foto’s van Torenvalkjongen te maken, toog ik gisteren kort na zonsopgang naar de kust. Daar is een nestkast in de duinen, waarbij de uitgevlogen jongen vaak op een hek of in de omliggende struiken gaan zitten, wat meestal net wat leukere beelden oplevert. Ook daar vond ik dus vijf jongen, en voor een tijdje werkten deze prima mee. Toen de zon echter hoger kwam, trokken ze zich terug op een gebouwtje om te gaan dutten. Een prima moment voor mij om maar weer eens op huis aan te gaan voor een kop koffie….
