“If I gave you diamonds and pearls, would you be a happy boy or a girl” (Prince, 1991). Of course, but an Arctic Loon will do as well (in Dutch the bird is called, translated, ‘Pearl Diver’, hence the reference to Prince). Most of these birds we get to see along the shoreline during winter, but sometimes one can be found inland – as was the case this week. I already had photographed one pretty nice last year, but as an appointment led me to the area, I decided to pay this one a visit as well. Always a treat to see, and even nicer if one can return home with some shots. The bird kept me – and some other befriended photographers I me – busy, as it was diving a lot and not always surfacing where we expected it to. The bird had chosen the marina of a holiday resort as its temporary home, and the surrounding buildings made for interesting reflections on the water. This in turn gave the images a different feel, all depending from which angle I shot the bird. Well, choosing and changing positions at least kept us active and warm 🙂 . Although it was actively diving, I hope the bird will be allright, as finding them in winter on inland waters is not always a good sign ….

Het meest kun je deze vogel zien langs onze kusten, in de winter. Maar soms zit er eentje in het binnenland, zoals het geval was eerder deze week. Ik had er vorig jaar al eentje best leuk kunnen fotograferen, maar toen ik voor een afspraak toch in de buurt moest zijn, besloot ik deze duiker ook maar met een bezoekje te vereren. Altijd leuk om te zien, en nog leuker wanneer je ook huiswaarts kan keren met wat plaatjes op je geheugenkaart. De vogel hield mij en de andere bevriende fotografen goed bezig, want hij dook veelvuldig en kwam lang niet altijd boven waar we dat verwachtten. De vogel had de jachthaven van een vakantiepark uitgezocht als tijdelijke verblijfplaats, en de omliggende gebouwen zorgden voor leuke reflecties op het water. Dat gaf op zijn beurt de foto’s weer een totaal verschillende sfeer, natuurlijk afhankelijk vanuit welke hoek ik fotografeerde. Omdat we ons hierom dus regelmatig moesten verplaatsen, bleven we in elk geval in beweging en warm 🙂 . Hoewel de vogel dus actief dook, hoop ik dat ‘ie okay is, want duikers in de winter op binnenwateren is helaas niet altijd een goed teken ….
