Het schijnt dat veel mensen regelmatig dromen dat ze kunnen vliegen. Misschien weerspiegelt dit wel een universeel verlangen naar vrijheid. Niet voor niets kennen we de uitdrukking ‘zo vrij als een vogel’. De vraag is of vissen ook dromen, en zo ja, of zij dan ook wel eens dromen dat ze kunnen vliegen. Okay, er zijn weliswaar ‘vliegende vissen’, maar of je dat nou echt vliegen kunt noemen? Ik heb ze wel eens gezien, en het ziet er toch wat wonderlijk uit. Enfin, voor sommige vissen wordt de droom in elk geval werkelijkheid, hoewel misschien wat anders dan gedacht. Kijk, als vis weet je natuurlijk dat je op enig moment voer bent voor iets anders. Of misschien weet je dat ook wel niet, en dat is misschien maar beter ook. Hoe dan ook: grote kans dat je rustig een beetje onder water aan het cruisen bent, en opeens verdwijnt in de bek van een andere zeebewoner. Game over. Maar het einde kan ook anders! Stel je voor: twee sterke klauwen grijpen je plotseling, tillen je uit het water, en nemen je mee de lucht in. En ja, dan ziet de wereld er opeens toch wel heel anders uit. Wow. Nooit geweten dat de zee ergens ophoudt. Je kijkt je ogen uit. Weliswaar zie je alles op z’n kop, maar wat zou het – weet jij veel. Gelukkig heb je geen benul van wat er nog komen gaat. Want de rondvlucht eindigt jammer genoeg niet weer terug in zee, waar je je soortgenoten zou kunnen vertellen over die mysterieuze bovenwaterwereld die je zojuist hebt gezien. Nee, helaas, het meest waarschijnlijk is dat je ergens op een tak of electriciteitspaal eindigt, waar je – tergend langzaam – vakkundig uit elkaar getrokken wordt. Ook een soort van game over. Maar goed, je hebt toch nog maar mooi wel even die vlucht meegepakt. En dat is vermoedelijk meer dan veel van je soortgenoten (en menig vakantieganger aankomende zomer) kunnen zeggen ….

Rumour has it that many people dream they can fly. Maybe this shows some universal craving for the ultimate freedom. Hence the expression ‘free as a bird’, or so I assume. Question is: can fish also dream? And if so, do they dream about flying as well? Okay, of course there’s these ‘flying fish’, but I am not sure if that really counts as flying. I saw them on several occasions, and it looks a bit weird to be honest. Anyway, for some fish the dream becomes reality at some point, albeit a little different than they had expected maybe. Let’s face it, as a fish you know that one day you’ll end as food for another creature. Or maybe you don’t know, which maybe even better. Whatever the case: big chance that one moment you’re cruising underwater, and the next moment you disappear in the mouth of some fellow ocean-dweller. Game over. But, there is an alternative! Imagine this: two strong talons suddenly grab you, lift you out of the water and hop, you’re airborne. Ha, then the world looks suddenly totally differently. Wow. Never knew that the ocean ends at some point. You don’t know where to look. Okay, you maybe seeing everything upside down, but how would you know? Luckily you don’t know what’s to come. As this flight doesn’t bring you back in the water, where you could tell all your buddies about the mysterieus world above the water you just witnessed. Nope, big chance you end up on the branch of some electricity pole, where you will be expertly pulled apart, terribly slowly. Game over as well. But hey, as a bonus you got this amazing flight. And that’s probably more than many of your fish buddies (and much holiday travellers this summer) will be able to say ….
