So much as I enjoyed seeing the Kingfishers (IJsvogel) over the last few days, so sad I was when I found the first winter victim this morning. Of course we all know that when it starts freezing and lakes and streams get covered with ice, many species that rely on open water will suffer and probably die. However, since there still enough open water where I found this little girl, I was surprised. Maybe the patches of open water attract too many birds, and territorial drift excludes some from access to the fishing grounds. Whatever the cause, it is never a pleasant sight.
