Sommige soorten zien we hier in het westen van het land vrijwel nooit, terwijl ze wel gewoon in Nederland broeden. Maar dat doet de Geelgors, want daar heb ik het over, dan vooral in de oostelijk helft van het land. Voor mij dus een feestje wanneer ik er weer eens eentje zie. Misschien zoiets als een Paarse Strandloper voor iemand uit Assen. Waar ik bij een Paarse Strandloper soms moet gapen, zal de Oosterling niet direct stoppen voor een Geelgors. Niet dat die Paarse Strandloper hier broedt, maar het gaat even om vogels die je in sommige delen van het land wel en in andere helemaal niet ziet 😉 . Enfin. Toen ik een paar dagen geleden een vogelgebiedje voor watervogels ging bekijken in Drenthe, trof ik langs het wandelpad er naartoe op een boerenakker een Geelgors. En niet zomaar eentje. Nee, een extreem nieuwsgierige. Toen ik half in de naastgelegen sloot ging staan voor een laag standpunt, kwam hij snel een kijkje nemen. Wat of ik daar wel niet aan het doen was. Nou, hem fotograferen dus. Een soort prettige samenwerking ontstond in de daarop volgende 20 minuten, wat in leuke plaatjes resulteerde. Toen ik op de terugweg van de vogelplas (die trouwens niks was) er weer langs liep, zat ‘ie alweer keurig op me te wachten. Uit beleefdheid  – en om mijn dankbaarheid te tonen – maakte ik nog maar wat plaatjes. Je wilt zo’n beest natuurlijk ook niet schofferen. Conclusie: fijne beestjes daar in het Oosten !

Some species we hardly ever get to see here in the West, even though they are normal breeding species for The Netherlands. But the Yellowhammer, which is the bird I am talking about, does live and breed mainly in the eastern part of the country. So for me, always a treat when I see one again. It must be similar to seeing a Purple Sandpiper for someone from the East. Where sometimes I yawn at seeing another Purple Sandpiper, an “Eastener” will probably not halt for a Yellowhammer. Well, not that the Purple Sandpiper is a breeding bird for our country, but the example is to illustrate that some birds can be seen in one part on the country, and not in another ;-). Anyway. When, some days ago, I went to check out a birding site for water birds in the province of Drenthe, I noticed a Yellowhammer on a farm field next to the path. And not an average one for that matter. No, this one was extremely curious. When I sort of jumped in the adjacent ditch to have the bird at eye-level, it quickly came over to have a look. As to what it was that I was doing down there. Well, shooting him, obviously. Some sort of nice cooperation developed for the next 20 minutes or so, which rendered some nice images. When, on my way back from the bird reserve (which was rather disappointing), I passed the place again, it was already waiting for me. To be polite – and express my gratitude – I made some more shots. I mean, you don’t want to be rude to such a bird. All in all: friendly birds there in the East !
