Opvallend vaak fotografeer ik steltlopers. En, ja, ik heb er een zwak voor. Zeker sommige plevieren (zoals de Goudplevier) hebben vaak zo’n gezellig rond koppie, waardoor ze een hoge aaibaarheidsfactor hebben. Daarnaast passen ze bij mijn favoriete manier van fotograferen: laag standpunt en geringe scherptediepte. Veel soorten zijn ook nog eens goed benaderbaar en veelal te vinden aan de kust, waar ik toevallig woon. Kortom: redenen genoeg waarom je ze vaak langs ziet komen hier. Er is echter nog een reden, al is die misschien iets minder prozaïsch. Er is namelijk iets dat ik nog liever doe dan fotograferen: slapen. De nachten kunnen mij niet lang genoeg duren en ik verheug me aan het begin van de avond al op het einde ervan. En vroeg opstaan? Horror! Maar ja, soms moet dat voor het licht. Dus ik doe het wel, alleen kijk er ik er niet al te vrolijk bij (zie laatste foto uit 2014). Liggend fotograferen is voor mij dus het beste alternatief voor in bed liggen. Vandaar dus al die steltlopers. Mooier kan ik niet maken. Het zal dan ook geen verbazing wekken dat ik ook tijdens mijn bezoek aan Helgoland weer veel tijd liggend heb doorgebracht. In bed zonder en op het strand met mijn camera ….

I noticeably often have waders as my subject. And, yes, I do have a weak spot for them. Especially some of the plovers (as the Golden Plover) have such lovely, round heads which puts them high up on the ‘cuteness scale’. Besides, they go well with my favourite way of shooting: low angle and shallow depth of field. Many waders are relatively easy to approach and can be found along the shorelines, where I happen to live. In short: enough reasons why you can see these birds feature my blogs quite often. But, there’s another reason, however it may be less prosaic. There is something that I prefer over bird shooting, and that is sleeping. Nights can’t be long enough for me and I already anticipate bedtime when the evenings still has to start. Getting up early? Horror! Alas, sometimes I have to, because of the light. So, I do get up early, but it doesn’t really make me smile (see last image from 2014). Shooting while laying on the ground therefore seems the next-best-thing to lying in bed. Hence all the waders. Sorry, it doesn’t get any better than this. It won’t surprise you that during my recent visit to Helgoland I spend a lot of time laying down. In bed without and on the beach with my camera ….
