De noordelijke kaalkopibis (ook wel ‘heremietibis’) kwam vroeger wijdverspreid voor in het Midden-Oosten, Noord-Afrika en Zuid- en Centraal-Europa. Een ontdekt fossiel toont aan dat de vogel minstens 1,8 miljoen jaar teruggaat. De laatste eeuwen is de populatie hard achteruit gegaan, maar in de twintigste eeuw heeft de mens nog een extra zetje gegeven, waardoor in die periode 98% van de nog resterende populatie verloren ging. Tot zover de vraag hoe leuk het voor de planeet is dat er mensen leven. Goed, moeders mooiste is het misschien niet, maar om ‘m nou uit te roeien? Een planeet zonder mensen zou voor veel soorten een verademing zijn. Enfin. Gelukkig zijn er hier en daar beschermingsprogramma’s gestart, waarbij met name die in Marokko succesvol zijn en waardoor er nu weer zo’n 700 vogels leven. Marokko is dan ook dé plek om deze vogel te zien. In 2010 kostte het ons nog wat moeite om ze te vinden, maar deze keer kreeg ik ze mooi, en vrij dichtbij voor de lens. Op weg naar de broedkolonie om hun partner af te wisselen, kwamen de vogels namelijk uitgebreid foerageren in het duingebied vlakbij ons hotel. Helaas wel midden op de ochtend, met knetterhard licht. Maar goed, met zo’n soort kun je niet te kieskeurig zijn denk ik dan maar.. 

The Northern Bald Ibis (also known as Hermit Ibis or Waldrapp) was once widespread throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and southern and central Europe, with a fossil record dating back at least 1.8 million years. In recent centuries, the population has declined sharply, but in the twentieth century, humans gave it an extra push, resulting in the loss of 98% of the remaining population during that period. So much for the question of how great human existence is for the planet. Alright, it might not be the prettiest bird around, but to wipe it out entirely? A planet without humans would be a relief for many species. Anyway. Fortunately, conservation programs have been launched here and there, particularly in Morocco, where they have been successful, and the population now numbers around 700 birds. Morocco is the place to see this bird. Back in 2010, it took us some effort to find them, but this time I got them nicely, and fairly close to the lens. On their way to the breeding colony to switch shifts with their partners, the birds foraged extensively in the dune area near our hotel. Unfortunately, it was in the middle of the morning, with harsh, glaring light. But hey, with a species like this, you can’t be too picky, I suppose…
