Around the beginning of this year, I had the opportunity to frame Short-eared Owls. As true masters in camouflage, during the day they were hardly discernible in the tall grasses. However in the late afternoon (mostly after sunset) the owls would start hunting. Watching them twist and turn is simply great. One day I was lucky enough with enough light as well and this made for some in-flight shots. Of course, a fly-by of this species is already a treat, but having the owls actually flying towards the camera is of course even nicer. The action in the last shot by the way did not result in a prey 🙂 .

Aan het begin van dit jaar had ik de mogelijkheid om Velduilen te fotograferen. Het zijn experts in camouflage, dus overdag waren ze nauwelijks te vinden tussen het hoge gras. In de late middag (veelal pas na zonsondergang) kwamen ze meestal in beweging en begonnen ze te jagen. Deze uilen door de lucht zien ‘dansen’ is een prachtig gezicht. Eén dag deden ze dit terwijl er voldoende licht was en kon ik een aantal vluchtfoto’s maken. Tuurlijk, een voorbij-vliegende velduil is al prachtig, maar als er eentje recht op de camera af komt is het nog mooier natuurlijk. De  actie op de laatste foto was trouwens een misser en resulteerde niet in een prooi 🙂 .
