Er iets met uilen. Maar wat precies? Ze zijn namelijk ongekend gewild onder fotografen. Is dit het ‘Harry Potter – effect’? Of komt het misschien omdat ze vrij gemakkelijk te doen zijn? Dat wil zeggen: als je weet waar je moet zijn. Maar weet je een plek, dat is het kat in het bakkie natuurlijk. Ze zitten namelijk meestal vrij stil, dus veel licht of een goede camera heb je niet nodig. En nog een voordeel: ze vliegen niet weg. Het ergste wat er kan gebeuren is dat, wanneer je er onder gaat staan springen en schreeuwen, ze geschrokken wegduiken in hun hol en zich de rest van de dag niet meer laten zien. So what? Dan ga je volgende dag lekker gewoon weer toch? Maar goed, alle gekheid op een stokje, het zijn natuurlijk stiekem wel lollige vogels. Dus als ik écht niet meer weet wat ik moet doen, loop ik wel eens rondje langs de buurtuilen hier. Soms zijn ze thuis, soms niet. De uil op deze foto’s is er zo eentje die ‘lekker onbetrouwbaar’ is. Soms laat ‘ie zich maanden niet zien, om vervolgens opeens een paar dagen achter elkaar acte de présence te geven. Leuk, want dan kun je wat plaatjes maken en – afhankelijk van het tijdstip – wat spelen met het licht 🙂 … 

There’s something with owls. But what exactly? They seem to be extremely wanted by photographers. Could this be the ‘Harry Potter effect’? Or maybe it is because they are relatively easy ‘to do’. If you know where to find them. But once you know a spot, it’s pretty easy. As they usually sit very still, you don’t need that much light or a good camera. Another advantage: they don’t fly off. Worst thing that can happen is that, when you start jumping up and down and make noise, they will witdraw into their cavity and won’t show themselves anymore for the rest of day. But hey, another day – another try ! But, seriously now, they are pretty cool birds, of course. So, when I am really out of ideas as to what to do, I sometimes take a walk to to check the owls in the neighborhood. Sometimes they are at home, sometimes not. The owl in this blog is one the unreliable ones. Sometimes it doesn’t show itself for months, and then will be present for days in a row. Great, as then one can make some images and – depending on the time – play a bit with the light 🙂 …
