The importance of Backgrounds

Great Cormorant checking the environment….

Often people pay most attention to their subject, sometimes resulting in wonderful shots. But ever so often they are disappointed when finally seeing the results of a day in the fields on their screen. The subject may be sharp and well exposed, the background often spoils the fun. Things suddenly appear that the maker hadn’t noticed while making the shot, or the colors of the background simply don’t match the subject. In this blog I show some shots that I made yesterday and today, so you  can see how a background can help getting a pleasant image. Or not, that of course is subject to the viewer’s judgement 🙂 . Well, the background colors on the Northern Lapwings (Kievit) speak for themselves. The function of the BG in the image of the Horned Lark (Strandleeuwerik) is to get an idea of the size of the bird, whereas the background of the Eurasian Bittern (Roerdomp) perfectly shows why it’s so hard to spot them 😉 . The main thing is to pay as much attention to the overall image as to the subject !

  1. Hallo Hans,

    Groeten,

    Remco
