The Black-tailed Godwits are back in the Netherlands,  a sort of unofficial Spring kick-of ! Their sound cannot be mistaken and is strongly connected to Spring in the ‘Dutch polder’. Since some 90% of the population in NW-Europe breeds in The Netherlands, there’s quite a few of them around. This, however, is deceiving: the Godwits are having a hard time nowadays, due to changes in agriculture and the ongoing expansion of cities. Hopefully the campaigns to protect this species will result in reverting the downward trend… Yesterday I found some that I could frame against backlight.

De Grutto’s zijn weer terug in Nederland, een soort officieus begin van de lente ! Hun roep is onmiskenbaar en is sterk verbonden met lente in de Nederlandse polder. Aangezien maar liefst 90% van de populatie in NW-Europa hier broedt, zijn er behoorlijk wat te zien. Laat je echter niet op het verkeerde been zetten: het gaat namelijk helemaal niet goed met de Grutto, door verandering in de landbouw en de uitbreiding van stedelijke gebieden. Hopelijk helpen de campagnes van o.a. de Vogelbescherming om de neerwaardse trend te keren…. Gisteren zag ik er enkele, die ik met tegenlicht kon fotograferen.
