This time of year one can see Northern Wheatears in many places along the coastline. Unfortunately the number of breeding Wheatears is declining rapidly in The Netherlands, due to changes in the soil and intensive outdoor recreation. So the best chances to see them is during the migration period. Last week I visited Hoek van Holland, a well-known rest area for migrating birds. After searching for a short while I found a couple of Wheatears, probably having a break on their long trip to Africa. Always fascinating to realize that these little birds travel thousands of kilometers every season. And another proof that it’s vital to protect not only the breeding and wintering grounds, but also the stops these birds use during their long journeys……

In deze tijd van het jaar kun je op veel plaatsen langs de kust Tapuiten tegenkomen. Helaas neemt het aantal broedvogels van deze soort in Nederland in rap tempo af, mede door de verandering in de bodemsamenstelling en de toegenomen recreatiedruk. De beste kans om ze te zien is dus tijdens de trek. Vorige week bezocht ik Hoek van Holland, een plek die bekend staat als rustplaats voor trekvogels. Vrij snel vond ik een paartje Tapuiten, waarschijnlijk even aan het uitrusten tijdens hun lange reis naar Afrika. Altijd fascinerend om je te beseffen hoe deze kleine vogeltjes elk seizoen weer duizenden kilometers afleggen. En een bewijs hoe belangrijk het is niet alleen de broed- en overwinteringsgebieden te beschermen, maar ook de rustplaatsen onderweg die de vogels aandoen…..
