Without doubt, the Western Meadowlark has the most beautiful song I have heard from any bird in the US so far. So, when I drove around in South Park (CO, USA) last week, I recognised it immediately. I couldn’t find a bird however. They seem to be able to beam their sound pretty well in a particular direction, which makes it hard to judge on the distance and hence it’s difficult to spot the bird when it’s in the field with tall grass. A totally different story of course, when they sing from a fence post. Problem then however is that they see me as well 😉 …. Although they’re not extremely shy, it took me many attempts and lots of time to arrive at a distance that allowed for good quality shots. The evening I heard the first bird, I got already got some okay images. But the best ones I got next morning when I spent two hours working on them, at sunrise. With freezing temperatures (elevation some 10.000 feet) and the car windows down it was pretty cold. Especially with shorts and flip flops…. Even though most of them can be categorised as ‘bird on a stick’ images, I was still very happy with the results!
Zonder twijfel zingt de Geelkaakweidespreeuw het mooiste lied van alle vogels die ik tot nu toe zag en hoorde in de VS. Dus, toen in rondreed in South Park (Colorado, VS) vorige week, herkende ik het geluid onmiddellijk. Ik kon echter aanvankelijk geen enkele vogel vinden. Ze kunnen hun geluid behoorlijk goed richten in een bepaalde richting, wat het lastig maakt in te schatten hoe ver weg de vogel zit. Wat het weer lastiger maakt om ‘m te lokaliseren als hij in een veld met hoog gras zit . Dat is totaal anders natuurlijk wanneer hij op een paaltje zit. Het probleem in dat geval is, natuurlijk, dat je zelf ook behoorlijk in de kijker loopt 😉 …. Hoewel ze niet extreem schuw zijn, kostte het me toch veel pogingen en tijd om tot een beetje behoorlijk afstand te geraken vanwaar ik goede foto’s kon maken. De avond dat ik de eerste vogel hoorde kon ik al wat okay -foto’s maken. De beste maakte ik echter de volgende ochtend toen ik ruim twee uur bezig ben geweest met ze, bij zonopkomst. Met temperaturen rond het vriespunt (ik zat op ongeveer 3000 meter hoogte) en de ramen open was het trouwens best fris. Zeker aangezien ik gekleed was in korte broek en slippers… Hoewel de meeste opnames onder noemer ‘vogel op een paaltje’ vallen, was ik er toch erg blij mee.
