Young, Red-footed and lost

Red-footed Falcon juv. (Roodpootvalk) scanning the area….

Over the last couple of days there has been an influx of Red-footed Falcons (Roodpootvalk) in the Netherlands. Since I was in Estonia and Latvia I already was afraid to miss out on this opportunity. This morning, I gave it a shot and I was lucky enough to find this lonely juvenile bird. Well, actually someone else present found it, I did not see it when I searched the area and had almost left (so thanks again !). I was able to make some evidence shots, but very slowly could get a little closer. Crawling on the field in shorts and having left my flip flops behind, I scratched legs, knees and feet – but it was worth it ๐Ÿ™‚ . After shooting for approx. 45 minutes (and I already slowly had retreated from the field) a Common Kestrel (Torenvalk) arrived at the scene with a prey. For some reason this caused some quarreling between the birds, and after some wing flapping both birds disappeared on the horizon (see attached shot of the quarrel). So yes, luck was with me for a change…

  1. Hallo Hans,
